We are recruiting for an experienced Laboratory Technician to join one of London’s leading Universities.

 

* You must have a valid DBS in order to be considered for this role *

 

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The main role of the post holder will be to provide technical support for the undergraduate teaching laboratory.

Support will also be provided for the department’s wider operations as required. This could involve work in other laboratories and teaching spaces, including large scale projects that have specific deadlines. This may occasionally involve being flexible with working hours to achieve these deadlines.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set up equipment for teaching sessions and store it away afterwards as necessary.
  • Prepare new materials and construct equipment for teaching sessions.
  • Support students during teaching sessions.
  • Instruct students on good laboratory and workshop practice, especially the safe operation of experimental equipment.
  • Provide laboratory supervision for work outside of teaching sessions.
  • Liaise with other technical staff as necessary.
  • Provide technical advice for academic and technical staff as well as students.
  • Organise and prioritise the workload in consultation with the laboratory manager.
  • Report any problems to the laboratory manager and be proactive in solving them.
  • To work in an orderly and safe manner, ensuring all equipment and lab facilities are clean and tidy after use.
  • Maintain the laboratory equipment in working order and advise the lab manager if a problem requires specialist maintenance.
  • Repair simple faults.
  • Maintain stock and materials by monitoring levels and ordering replacements.
  • Help ensure the teaching laboratory is run in accordance with the established Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Contribute to the overall activities of the department as required.
  • Attend regular meetings, workshops and training as required.
  • Contribute to the induction and direction of other staff and students as required.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Experience of working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Experience of working independently and using your own initiative.
  • Experience of working in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience of working with students in a laboratory environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact with staff at all levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build good working relationships.
  • Willing to learn and adapt to new techniques.
  • Basic IT skills and competency with the Microsoft Office suite of programmes.
  • Good organisational and time management skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Valid DBS certificate.
  • Strong numerical skills.
