Are you an experienced Research and Enterprise Officer looking for a new role? How would you like the opportunity to join one of London’s leading Universities as a temporary member of staff?

 

Research Grant and Funding Administration

  • Disseminate information on new funding initiatives and deadlines.
  • Organise the provision of financial data to inform costings for funding and proposals.
  • Prepare funding applications, providing costing for proposed project.
  • Ensure that accounts and budgets for new awards are set up.
  • Monitor expenditure against grant budget and alerting relevant people on under and over-spends.
  • Processing research student fees and stipends.
  • Work with academic and research staff to set and adhere to proposal deadlines as well as meet the sponsor’s funding guidelines.
  • Oversee the proposal process and support senior colleagues in research management as needed.
  • Monitor proposal budgets to ensure financial viability and report to senior colleagues for approval.
  • Organise contract set-up for newly awarded projects.
  • Generate account codes.
  • Maintain post-award support, advising grant holders.
  • Work with grant holders to record outputs and assess impact.
  • Provide financial reports for grant activity.
  • Co-ordinate internal research funding by sending out and collecting application forms then circulating the forms around committee members for consideration. Once decisions have been made, the post holder will inform successful applicants.
  • Maintain minutes of funding committee meetings and records of awards distributed.

 

Research Project Administration

  • Oversee the tracking, updating and maintenance of records and files of all correspondences, minutes and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Prepare regular and accurate reports of the progress of projects and provide metrics in appropriate format for all relevant project stakeholders.
  • Initiate and monitor the process of research staff appointments and contract extensions as well as directly assist in the recruitment of new research staff.
  • Keep all information confidential and comply with data protection and ethics legislation.

 

Research Communication, Marketing, Knowledge Transfer and Enterprise

  • Be responsible for distributing Research Bulletins and other research announcements.
  • Prepare and edit documents for internal and external circulation regarding departmental research.
  • First point of contact for all enquiries relating to research activities.
  • Promote and publicise research in the department to increase engagement and collaboration with industry through events, the web and other media.
  • Support the setup of networks for industrial liaison and the publication of the expertise for consultancy and for industry-academic projects.
  • Liaise with staff in Enterprise to increase opportunities in the department.
  • Maintain a database of all research-consultancy projects and income generation for reporting to senior management.
  • Organise research seminar series within the department.
  • Produce materials to showcase the Department to a range of different potential partners.
  • Promoting and marketing the Department’s research activity.
  • Undertake marketing and research strategy reports.
  • Implement systems to monitor promotional and advertising effectiveness.

 

Networking and Event Management

  • Support academic and research staff in fostering collaborative research links with other universities, industry and government agencies.
  • Organise relevant networking events to facilitate opportunities for collaborative research.
  • Develop internal and external networks and raise the profile of the department within the field.
  • Organise or assist in organising networking events, open days, lecture series, symposiums etc.
  • Liaise with departmental alumni, create and manage a database of contacts for events.

 

Research Excellence Framework (REF) Support

  • Prepare and maintain staff files for submission
  • Assist staff with their online Research Staff Records.
  • Support the lead academic in all aspects of the report’s preparation.
  • Communicate goals and deadlines to REF-selected staff.
  • Monitor and amend REF database.
  • Identify, monitor and record ‘impact’ in terms of research activity within the department.
  • Help to develop procedures for collating and presenting research portfolios and information concerning research impact. 

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of contemporary strategic issues and challenges facing both higher education and the research specialism of the department.
  • Knowledge and understanding of university knowledge exchange and enterprise.

 

Skills and/or Abilities

  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and the Internet.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop effective relationships.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Good numeracy skills with the ability to present and interpret figures and statistics.
  • Capable of understanding and analysing research proposals and business plans and being able to offer constructive comments and feedback.
  • Ability to collate and present management level information and to draft correspondence and reports.
  • Ability to maintain accurate financial records and develop financial procedures.
  • Ability to analyse budgets and produce management reports.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills, time management and project management skills, including the ability to work effectively on numerous projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent networking and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to make and carry out decisions and know when to confer with colleagues or refer matters onwards.
  • Ability to work independently; to manage own workload under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to be discrete and maintain confidentiality in accordance with current Data Protection Legislation.

Experience

  • Planning and management of multi-stakeholder projects.
  • Organising and servicing committees including taking minutes.
  • Financial administration and/or financial databases.
  • Research funding and related issues.
  • Working in a higher education environment or an environment related to the department’s research specialisms.
  • Assessing client needs.
  • Developing and maintaining excellent customer relationships.

 

Developing effective costing and pricing strategies.

  • Enterprise activities and developments in areas relevant to the department
  • Developing or synthesizing funding applications.
  • Web publishing software.
  • Event and conference organisation and management.

 

Personal Characteristics and Other requirements

  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively as well as independently.
  • Confident in presenting well researched cases.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure to tight deadlines.
